This is a story about something that happened in class, something the writer didn’t see coming and didn’t really know how to explain at the time. It’s not loud or dramatic. Just real. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed and kept it to yourself, you might relate. If not, it’s still worth reading.

I had a panic attack in class, and it was terrifying, especially because I had no clue what was happening.
I hadn’t slept much the night before because I was up late finishing an essay that was due the next day. I was already nervous because I thought I was going to bomb it.
During second period, my chest started feeling tight, my hands were sweaty, and I felt dizzy, like I was going to pass out. I seriously thought something was wrong with my heart with how fast it was beating. I wanted to leave but didn’t want to make a scene, so I sat through the whole class trying to look normal while I felt like I was dying inside.
Afterward, I went to the bathroom and just stood there for ten minutes, trying to breathe. As usual, no one noticed and I didn’t tell anyone.
Later, I googled it and read that it was probably a panic attack.
I’ve had a couple since. I still haven’t told my parents, but I told a teacher I trust. She helped me make a plan if it happens again.
I used to think panic attacks only happened to super anxious people. But I think mine was from pressure and not sleeping and just being overwhelmed.
If it happens to you, you’re not crazy. It’s a thing. You’re not alone.
